Price Impact: Why Your Large AMM Swap is Burning Your Capital
Price impact is the difference between current market price and the price you get because your own trade size shifted the pool ratio. Learn how x*y=k works against you.
Price Impact
Price impact is the immediate loss in execution price caused by your own trade’s size shifting the ratio of assets in an Automated Market Maker (AMM) liquidity pool. It is often confused with slippage, but they are fundamentally different: slippage is when someone else moves the price while your transaction is pending; price impact is when you move the price.
The Math That Punishes Size on AMMs
AMMs like Raydium or Uniswap price assets using the constant product formula: x * y = k. When you buy an asset, you remove it from the pool and add the paired token (like SOL or USDC). The larger your removal relative to the pool’s depth, the exponentially worse your price becomes.
Why whale trades get destroyed:
- You are buying a new Solana meme coin with a $100,000 liquidity pool ($50K SOL / $50K Token)
- You market buy with $10,000 worth of SOL (10% of the pool depth)
- Because of the x * y = k curve, you do not get 10% of the token supply. You get significantly less.
- Your Price Impact: ~9%. You instantly lost $900 in value the second the trade confirmed, regardless of what the chart says.
This is why chart watchers often get confused when they sell the exact top but receive 15% less USDC than their portfolio tracker promised. The tracker shows the marginal price of 1 token; your sell order moved the entire curve.
Real Example: $50,000 WIF Swap
Setup: You want to buy $50,000 of $WIF on Raydium.
Scenario A: Dumb Market Buy
- Pool liquidity is $1,000,000.
- You swap $50,000 in one transaction.
- Price impact is roughly 4.7%.
- You instantly lose ~$2,350 to the AMM curve before fees.
Scenario B: The Intelligent Degen Approach (TWAP)
- You use a bot (like BullX or Trojan) to TWAP (Time-Weighted Average Price) your buy.
- The bot splits your $50,000 order into 10 trades of $5,000 over 5 minutes.
- Price impact per trade is ~0.49%.
- Total impact loss is significantly reduced as arbitrageurs refill the pool between your micro-buys.
The Ultimate Fix: If the asset is listed on a Central Limit Order Book (CLOB) like Hyperliquid, do not use an AMM. Place a limit order. Limit orders have zero price impact.
