Rug Pull: The Most Common Scam in DeFi

A rug pull is a scam where developers abandon a project and steal all the liquidity. Learn the difference between a hard rug and a soft rug, and how to avoid them.

Rug Pull

A rug pull is a malicious maneuver in the cryptocurrency industry where crypto developers abandon a project and run away with investors’ funds, typically by draining the decentralized liquidity pool.

It is the equivalent of a digital bank robbery, executed flawlessly because retail traders failed to audit the smart contract before investing.

Hard Rugs vs Soft Rugs

1. The Hard Rug (Code Exploits)

A hard rug is executed using malicious code explicitly written into the smart contract.

  • Liquidity Drain: The developer keeps the LP Tokens unburned. Once the pool is full of retail SOL or ETH, they click withdraw, instantly taking 100% of the value.
  • Infinite Mint: The developer retains Mint Authority, prints 100 trillion tokens, and market-sells them into the pool, crashing the price to zero.
  • Honeypot: The code physically blocks anyone except the developer from selling.

2. The Soft Rug (Social Engineering)

A soft rug occurs without any malicious smart contract code. The tokenomics are perfectly safe (LP burned, mint revoked), but the developers act in bad faith.

  • The Dev Dump: The developers and their Cabal quietly buy 40% of the supply across 50 different hidden wallets at launch. After paying influencers to hype the coin to a massive valuation, they slowly TWAP sell their entire supply, crushing the chart and abandoning the social media accounts.
  • The Slow Bleed: The developer promises massive utility (a game, a staking app, a revolutionary DEX), raises funds, and then simply stops working. The token bleeds to zero out of sheer apathy.

How to Never Get Hard Rugged Again

You can entirely eliminate hard rugs from your trading by exclusively using professional sniper bots like BullX or Trojan. These terminals feature “Auto-Rug Protection” that physically blocks your transaction if the contract has an unlocked LP or active Mint Authority.

  • Honeypot — A specific type of hard rug where selling is disabled.
  • LP Token — What developers use to execute a liquidity drain.
