Wash Trading: How Devs Fake Meme Coin Volume

Wash trading is the illegal practice of simultaneously buying and selling the same asset to create artificial volume and trick DexScreener trending algorithms.

Wash Trading

Wash trading is the deceptive practice of simultaneously buying and selling the same cryptocurrency from different wallets controlled by the same entity, creating the illusion of high trading volume and market demand.

In traditional finance, this is highly illegal and heavily penalized by the SEC. In the decentralized Wild West of meme coins, it happens on every single token launch.

Why Meme Coin Devs Wash Trade

The entire goal of a meme coin developer is to attract real retail liquidity so they can eventually dump their bags (or just collect trading fees). To get retail attention, they must get their token onto the “Trending” pages of aggregators like DexScreener or DEXTools.

These algorithms rank tokens based on:

  1. Total Volume
  2. Number of Transactions
  3. Velocity of Trades

To game the system, a developer will write a script that funds 50 different wallets with $100 of SOL each. The script then rapidly buys and sells the token back and forth between the wallets.

The chart suddenly shows $5 million in 24-hour volume and 10,000 transactions. Retail traders see a “hot new trending coin” and ape in. Once real money enters the pool, the developer stops the wash trading script and dumps their tokens on the real buyers.

How to Spot Wash Trading

You can easily defeat wash traders by ignoring the “Volume” metric and looking at the Makers vs Takers data (as explained in our DexScreener Metrics Guide).

  • Makers: The number of unique wallets interacting with the contract.
  • Takers/TXs: The total number of trades.

If a token has 25,000 transactions in the last hour, but only 40 Makers, you are looking at a wash trading bot farm. A healthy, organic token with 25,000 transactions should have at least 3,000 to 5,000 unique Makers.

Never buy a token based purely on volume or transaction count. Always verify the unique wallet distribution.
